What is the CCP certification?

The Certified Cost Professional (CCP®) is awarded by AACE International (the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering) to experienced practitioners who demonstrate advanced knowledge of Total Cost Management (TCM) — the integrated approach to planning, executing, and managing project costs across the life of a capital project.

In construction, oil & gas, EPC, infrastructure, and energy megaprojects, the CCP is widely treated as the benchmark credential for senior cost engineers, cost controllers, and project controls leads. AACE describes the CCP as the encompassing “umbrella” credential above its specialist certifications (CEP for estimating, PSP for planning & scheduling, EVP for earned value, and others). Certification is valid for 3 years and maintained through CEUs or by re-examination.

CCP eligibility requirements

Two verification details catch many applicants out: your experience must be verified by your employer (a CV, résumé, or job description alone is not accepted — AACE provides an Employment Verification Form), and all documents must be in English or carry an official English translation. CCP exam format & the 2026 blueprint

AACE introduced a new exam blueprint in May 2026 that restructures the CCP exam around 7 domains. If you're using older study materials organized around the previous four-part structure, you're studying for an exam that no longer exists.

The 7 exam domains (2026 blueprint)

Each domain is scored and averaged into your overall result. You don't have to pass every domain — you can fail individual topics and still pass overall if your average clears 70%.

How much does the CCP certification cost in total?

Realistically, a well-prepared candidate using self-paced training invests $1,115–$1,280 all-in (training plus exam fee). AACE also lists optional study materials such as the CCP Certification Study Guide ($50 member / $100 non-member) and “Skills & Knowledge of Cost Engineering”, 6th Edition ($50 / $150).

The 5-step exam process

1. Application. Create your AACE profile, complete the CCP application, upload your employer verification (and degree, if using the degree path), and pay the exam fee.
2. Clearance. AACE reviews your application and clears you to test. Your 6-month registration period applies.
3. Schedule. Choose a Kryterion testing center or online proctoring, and pick your slot. You can reschedule free of charge up to 72 hours before your exam.
4. Exam. Bring your exam confirmation and calculator; know your AACE ID — you must include it in your memo.
5. Results. MCQs are computer-scored; memos are graded in monthly cycles beginning around the 15th, with results emailed around the 5th of the following month. If you don't pass, you can resit at the reduced $260 fee (up to twice within your registration period).

How to prepare for the CCP exam: an 8–12 week plan

1. Weeks 1–2 — Diagnose. Review the 7 domains against your daily work. Most candidates are strong in cost management but rusty in engineering economics, scheduling, or risk — exactly where the blueprint hides easy marks.
2. Weeks 3–8 — Learn systematically. Work through structured lessons domain by domain, keyed to AACE's “Skills & Knowledge of Cost Engineering” (6th Edition). 3. Weeks 8–10 — Master the memo. Practice the Domain 7 memo format early, not in the final week. Study real sample memos and learn the structure graders expect.
4. Weeks 10–12 — Simulate. Take full-length, timed 5-hour simulations. Review every wrong answer, close the gaps, and repeat until you consistently score above 70%.

The in-exam memo, explained

Domain 7 of the CCP exam is a written memo — a professional communication responding to a cost-engineering scenario, completed during the same 5-hour sitting, typed into an on-screen text box. AACE recommends reserving 40–60 minutes for it, and you must include your AACE ID number in your response.

The memo is the most underestimated part of the exam. It's graded by AACE volunteer graders in monthly grading cycles, against professional communication standards — and technically strong candidates routinely lose critical marks because they've never practiced the format under time pressure. Renewal and maintaining certification

CCP certification isn't permanent — it must be renewed every 3 years from your certification date, either by accumulating 12 continuing education units (CEUs) through professional development activities, or by re-sitting and passing the exam again. Most professionals find the CEU path straightforward if they track qualifying activities (conferences, relevant training, technical papers) throughout the cycle rather than scrambling in year three.
